Shadow as Material

Notes on the presence and movement of shadows in quiet rooms.

Shadows are often described as absences, yet in a quiet room they behave like positive forms. They have crisp or soft edges, varying density, and a clear relationship to the objects or architecture that cast them. As the sun moves, these forms stretch, shorten, and sometimes disappear entirely, only to reappear in a different place the next day.

Learning to see shadows as material rather than emptiness changes how one experiences even the simplest room. The corner where two walls meet becomes more interesting when a shadow from the window frame crosses it at an angle. The floor is no longer a flat plane but a surface that receives and transforms the shapes the light allows it to hold.
